Zoe Leonard Strange Fruit (1992-97) Philadelphia Museum of Art, March 2023
Empty fruit skins sewed together and meant to decay on display. Created in NY in the early days of the AIDS crisis. "In this climate of discrimination and neglect, people were dying daily, their bodies treated by the US government and healthcare industries as disposable." Named after the song; fruit representing life's fagility. "...[I]n this work the process of decomposition unfolds before our eyes, offering a haunting and poignant meditation on mortality and transformation."
